When we operate precision instruments, we will use RF adapter and RF cable. These RF adapters and RF cables cooperate with our instruments to enable us to obtain accurate test data. So how do we connect RF correctly?

1.  select RF connector correctly

First of all, choose RF adapter and RF cable with relatively good quality. As shown in the figure, when we use two original RF adapters, 89.9% of the signal can pass normally at the working frequency of 18GHz. 91.9% signals can pass normally without adapter. The amount of signal transmitted is similar to that in the case of using two original adapters. However, after we replaced one of the adapters with a non original inferior adapter, only 38.1% of the signal can pass normally at the working frequency of 18GHz, which has seriously affected the test. In addition, the physical size of the poor adapter does not meet the standard, which will wear the RF interface of the instrument over time.

2. operate with both hands and tighten the correct thread

When connecting the microwave connector, it is necessary to connect the connector with the RF interface horizontally, and then operate with both hands. Fix the connector at the designated position with one hand, and connect it at the designated position with a torque wrench with the other hand.

Never operate with one hand, because it is not easy to connect the connector with the RF port horizontally. If they produce a certain angle and then tighten the connector, it will produce a mechanical stress and cause physical damage to the connector.

The cable of N-type RF Connector also needs to be operated with both hands. The specific process should be to first check whether there is foreign matter at the interface. Then fix the cable body with one hand so that it cannot rotate, and then rotate the cable thread with the other hand to tighten it.

3 use torque wrench

Please use a torque wrench when connecting the adapter and cable. The use of torque wrench can not only ensure the full connection, but also avoid the physical damage of the device caused by excessive force. In use, special attention should be paid to the two error demonstrations shown in the figure below. The rotation angle of torque wrench should not be too large, and the position of hand should not be too forward. Both errors will result in incorrect force.

Different torque wrenches are required for connectors of different specifications. Compare the following table, such as n-type connector, please use a 12 pound torque wrench. At the same time, we should note that the physical dimensions of SMA connector and 3.5mm connector are the same, but the pounds of torque wrench are different. When using these two connectors, pay attention to using the corresponding torque wrench.

The above three points can avoid the damage of RF connector, so as to ensure the normal progress of instrument test and the accuracy of test.
