British mobile network operator Vodafone UK has announced that it is implementing a project aimed at making the “best and most efficient use of spectrum and energy resources”, Comms Update reported on September 3, the company confirmed. 10MHz of the 900MHz spectrum previously used for 3G services has now been reallocated for 4G.

Vodafone UK claims the project to restructure and reallocate spectrum in the 900MHz band will double customers’ low-band capacity, improving the 4G experience and network reliability. The reallocated 4G spectrum will also be complemented by the deployment of massive MIMO antennas, further enhancing the customer experience. However, the company has confirmed that a “dedicated block” of 900MHz of spectrum will be reserved for 2G and 3G services.

Meanwhile, Vodafone UK reported that it had completed the first deployment of a new 5G radio, which reduced energy consumption by an average of 43% per day and up to 55% during off-peak hours. As the development is being carried out in partnership with Swedish supplier Nokia, Vodafone UK said it plans to deploy 1,500 new low-power 5G devices by April 2022, suggesting the new 5G technology will support its implementation in the UK by 2027 Commitment to net zero emissions.
